10 May 2019 --- New research has pinpointed a method for producing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) – a versatile plant-derived chemical that can produce bio-based plastics – which is efficient, economically feasible, and crucially, ready for commercialization. Published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science, a team from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison tout the process as simple and compatible with the existing infrastructure in the high fructose corn syrup industry, meaning it could be scaled up and applied to the plastic polymer industry.
